I have a collapsible TV tray that I picked up from Ikea that functioned as a night stand through my college years. I like the design and it’s the perfect height for the couch. But as an unfinished wood, years of use took it’s toll.
I gave the table a good sanding to get out the stains and watermarks. Those sandpaper sponges are money! I totally don’t know if I’m misusing it (I just happened across it looking for sandpaper) but it was a lot easier to work with than typical sandpaper.
After giving the table a clear stain, I wrapped the surface with newspaper in preparation for spray painting.
I was really excited to try oil rubbed bronze (ORB) spray paint. I’m not sure if these legs were extra thirsty or what but the paint job took about half a can of spray paint and about four coats. And jeez, if regular spray paint recommends using in an open environment, this stuff needs to be used with a gas mask!
Trying to really finish furniture painting for my first time ever, I sealed the top with some paste finishing wax. Despite two coats of clear seal and finishing wax, I still feel like the table top is somewhat porous; moisture doesn’t seem to repel off.
And here’s the final product.
To me, the ORB spray paint really didn’t resemble a metallic surface too much. Perhaps it was the fact that I was working with wood but the results didn’t quite come out as I expected.
And I owe the balcony a good scrub down. It won’t be the first time! It’s hard working at night and in the dark.

You furniture painting pros, any tips to really seal furniture? Any fun Ikea hacks in the works?

I had one that I painted, but I did it all one color. I like that you left the top natural. Looks great.

Thanks! Now if only I can seal off the top…

Cute! I think the unsealed wood just eats up paint! We re-did a couple of barstools from Ikea in the same wood style and had the same issue.

Thanks, Brittney. I’ll try sealing it first next time. I’m sure my future holds many an Ikea hack : ]

That looks great! I have two sets of those, four each, so eight total. I know we received one set as a wedding present but I don’t even know where the other set came from, actually! I never thought about painting them but your table looks nice. I’ll have to give that some thought.

Thank you! I think they’re great especially since we seem to move to often. They definitely save on space : ]

I think your tray table turned out really well! I love the ORB mixed with the wood top.
My current Ikea hack that I’m working on are my cheap Rast dressers that I’m turning into night stands.

Thanks! Looking forward to seeing your finished results! I have a brown dresser and I’m feeling like converting all our bedroom furniture to white so there could be another Ikea makeover for me in the near future.

That looks so good!!! We have a TV tray too and it was one of only 3 made by my husbands Grandpa. So we have it more for sentimental reasons and love it as well.

I love furniture with a story!

It really looks great! I would have set up the same sort of makeshift spray paint ‘box’. Sometimes being crafty on the fly is messy. ;) I’m impressed that you aren’t afraid to try new things. What a lesson to learn. After all, we learn from our mistakes.

I think all my crafting is done on the fly! Nap time is always a gamble and I always end up making a mess. A box makes sense. I think I had just taken all our recyclables to our shared bin. Thanks for the tip!

Try a few very thin coats of minwax polycrylic to seal off your project. You can get it in gloss or matte finish for whatever look you want!
